Topic:
Measurement and Analysis of Digital Signals
Phil Dubs
Pixelmetrix
Digital signals are pervasive in the modern broadcast and video facility.=20
These signals include SDI, HD-SDI, MPEG Transport Streams and RF signals=20
such as 8VSB and various flavors of QAM from satellite. The ability to=20
monitor the health and status of these signals at many points in the signal=
=20
path is a critical component of maintaining the validity of the signal and=
=20
for isolating areas of the infrastructure where problems occur. Mr. Phil=20
Dubs of Pixelmetrix will discuss the methods of monitoring all of these=20
signal points, content verification and will demonstrate the DV-Station, an=
=20
integrated tool for preventative monitoring of digital networks.=20
Pixelmetrix is a Singapore based technology company founded by members of=20
the HP MPEG group.

Remember Saturday, December 7:
The Atlanta Section Fall Conference, =93After Compliance=85What=92s Next?=94=
is=20
scheduled for Saturday, December 7th at Georgia Public TV. The all-day=20
event features two separate conference tracks, one focused on Content=20
Management and one focused on Facility Infrastructure. A conference=20
announcement and registration form accompanies this Section newsletter.=20
Complete program information will be sent soon. If you have any questions,=
=20
please do not hesitate to contact Dave Siegler, Mickey Kroll or Ron Caird.=
=20
Contact information can be found on the front of this newsletter.
October Meeting Report:
Ryad Kahale of Vizrt presented the October program on Efficiency in=20
Graphics Workflow. Kahale described the current situation as one of=20
multiple purposes for much of the material produced by a station or=20
production facility. The method presented for gaining efficiency in=20
managing materials and workflow is to separate the two components of what=20
is commonly referred to as =91Graphics=92. Kahale referred to these two=20
components as Content =96 text and pictures =96 and Graphics =96 how any=20
particular content is presented or how it looks. By building and storing=20
reusable templates for graphics and by maintaining separate storage of text=
=20
and picture content, the two components can be stored, manipulated and=20
shared using centralized databases. Discreet Content can be routed for use=
=20
in multiple Graphic templates. This allows repurposing and multiple use to=
=20
be done easily and efficiently. It also allows updating with new=20
information to be done easily in real time. This capability is particularly=
=20
useful in applications such as election coverage, sports, financial news=20
and other areas where rapid display of constantly changing data is required.
Easier to use web address:
This web site can now be reached with the address atlsmpte.arfunk.com,=20
without the "www" and with no slashes. (This is in addition to=20
www.arfunk.com/atlsmpte =97 just another way to reach the same site.)
News of Related Organizations:
The Peach State Chapter of the Society of Broadcast Engineers is=20
reorganizing and plans to become more active. They now have a web site at=20
www.broadcast.net/~sbe5/ where you can find more information.
The Order of the Iron Test Pattern has reorganized, with new levels of=20
membership available such that those with as little as 15-minutes=20
experience now qualify. The Order's Creed: "Through snow and glitches,=20
dropouts, ghosts and now cliff-effect, we survive =97 undaunted." Those=20
interested in the order can learn more at its web site, www.oitp.org.
Program Suggestions:
Is there a topic that you would like us to cover or want to present? Do you=
=20
have new equipment or a facility you would like to show off? We are always=
=20
looking for hosts and presenters for our meetings.

Note from the Webmaster:
I'm sorry this email, and this month's update to the web site, are so late.=
=20
Sending it out on the Sunday before Monday's meeting is not acceptable, to=
=20
you or to me. While the delay was due to my working extra hours and days=20
this month due to November sweeps (especially important for those of us=20
involved with local news) and our coverage of the election, I still should=
=20
have found the time to take care of this.
