Topic:
Color Gamut Issues and Answers
Jim Edwards
Senior Applications Engineer
Tektronix
In today's video world there are multiple color sets in use. There is also =
an increasing occurrence of upconversion, downconversion, format conversion=
and multiple uses for material. As a result it is important to understand =
the relationships, similarities and differences in color gamut in these =
formats. Jim Edwards, Senior Applications Engineer with Tektronix and past =
SMPTE Governor will discuss the different color formats and answer =
questions such as how to identify which colors work in which format and =
what can cause a color to be legal but invalid.

Atlanta Section Fall Conference Report:
A successful all day regional conference was held at Georgia Public =
Television in midtown Atlanta on December 7th. The goal of "After =
Compliance... What's Next?" was to learn more about the many issues =
involved with handling the digital content and facility infrastructure =
after meeting the FCC ATSC transmission deadlines. With most attendees =
already understanding the analog to digital conversion and the transmission=
standards, we wanted to cover the many areas 'in between' conversion and =
transmission. We had eighteen presenters from diverse disciplines who gave =
forty-five minute presentations in two simultaneous program tracks with =
attendance balanced between the two.
The Content Management/ Software track touched on subjects including =
server design, workflow, editing, digital content management and archiving.=
While there were some theoretical differences in design philosophies, we =
learned that the basic server system building blocks are very similar and =
are beginning to utilize the burgeoning SAN storage technology. From the =
presentations on automation we learned of new ways of making ingest more =
efficient along with methods of automating the archive process. We also =
found a common thread in many server discussions that "you will get out of =
the project what you put into analyzing the workflow" and that you must =
spend significant time training the operators throughout the project and =
not just after the construction has been completed.
The Digital Infrastructure/ Hardware track covered a number of areas that =
represent new areas of concern in the ATSC and digital environment. Topics =
ranged from dealing with material in a variety of aspect ratios to the =
effects of noise on the encoded signals reaching the viewer at home. There =
were two common themes to the presentations. The first was a need to plan =
and use new infrastructure that will assist the operators and engineers in =
monitoring the system and identifying problems quickly. The second theme =
related to the need for the broadcaster to take control over the material =
transmitted. Whether in the video or the audio realm, consumer devices =
allow the user a great deal of control over the presentation of the =
material. To insure that the viewer sees what content producers intend it =
will be important for the broadcaster to make good decisions before =
transmitting their signal. Then the viewer will be less likely to =
manipulate the material in their home.
At the conclusion of the presentations we had a wrap-up panel discussion =
with the presenters. This hour-long panel was moderated by Clyde Smith, of =
Turner Entertainment Group answering questions from attendees concerning =
the delivery of digital content and the general state of the industry. =
There was also some lively discussion about how the industry is delivering =
on 'the promise' of pristine content and its quality to the consumer. =
Obviously the industry is changing very quickly with emerging technologies =
and in a time of economic challenge. With this in mind it is more =
important then ever that we stay on top of the challenges and technological=
solutions through the educational and collaborative opportunities =
afforded by SMPTE.
