MXF-Material Exchange Format Demystified
Lowell Moulton, SONY Systems Integration
There are many new SMPTE standards in balloting or trial relating to the new video and audio file interchange format,
MXF. Lowell Moulton, Senior Technical Consultant with Sony Systems Integration will review these standards and why you should care about
MXF. He will discuss the engineering guidelines for MXF, Unique Material ID
(UMID) and the MXF Descriptive Metadata Scheme. MXF enables material to be easily searched and accessed at temporal resolutions down to individual frames. This creates a potential for dramatic effect on workflow.
Mr. Moulton will also review some of the basic strategies and considerations for building production and distribution systems using
MXF, metadata enabled digital asset management
and mixed MXF and SDI plants.
Make plans to join your colleagues for this timely and informative program on a very timely subject.

May 2003 Section Meeting:
On May 19th, about 25 members of the Atlanta SMPTE section gathered in the Multi-purpose room at Turner for an open discussion on a range of topics. Clyde Smith began by discussing the state of SMPTE as an organization and expressing concern over a continuing drop in membership at the national and international level. This led to a discussion of the actions that the Atlanta section can take to expand membership, involve more of the current membership and help revive neighboring Sections. We discussed topics of interest for upcoming programs as well as new locations for meetings that may help attract members. Several members also discussed new projects that were in process or recently completed in their facilities. One general consensus that emerged was that we should have this a ‘State of the Section’ meeting once a year as it was a useful and educational experience.
looking for ballots for new officers for the Section. These should be arriving in the mail soon. There are several qualified candidates thanks to the work of Jim McKechnie and the Nominating Committee. Please be sure to return your ballots with your selections.
Upcoming Section Meetings:
The July program will be provided by AVID on a topic to be decided. Leitch will provide the program for August. Sigma Systems is tentatively scheduled for September.
