Topic:
Considerations in Designing a
Nonlinear News Workflow
James Frantzreb, Avid Technology, Inc.
Nonlinear news production is rapidly becoming accepted as the new industry standard for stations seeking to upgrade or rebuild news production facilities. Many major broadcasters around the world (and many smaller ones) have made this transition. This presentation will discuss the essential components and considerations in designing a reliable, cost effective, nonlinear shared media network for news that can improve production workflow, augment creative output; and generate increased revenue while protecting broadcasters' capital investments. Specific reference will be made to the design and workflow criteria on which Avid has based its news workflow solutions, and what has been learned from experience in implementing well over 100 nonlinear news installations. Last, useful guidelines for planning and implementation, including vendor interoperation, will be provided.

June 2003 Section Meeting:
On June 9th, 40 members of the Atlanta SMPTE section met at the MCSi facility in Norcross to listen to a presentation on the MXF standard by Lowell Moulton of Sony Integration. Lowell has been active in efforts to define and standardize the Material eXchange Format, a technology to allow networked distribution of AV materials. The specification is being developed by a consortium of users, manufacturers and other industry groups. Lowell provided a fairly detailed primer on the structure and uses of MXF.
MXF is format independent as any format of material can be mapped into the MXF wrapper. MXF allows for mid-transfer monitoring of header data and for synchronization of audio, video and data information. The promise of MXF is to provide a common mechanism for transporting material between ingest, storage, playout, logging and other devices within a networked operation, greatly enhancing workflow and the utility of
materials.
Upcoming Section Meetings:
Leitch will provide the program for August. Sigma Systems is tentatively scheduled for September.
Suggestions and volunteers for upcoming meeting locations and programs are welcome. Please contact Ron Caird or Dave Siegler.
